• Is opalite a real stone?

  Opalite is not a mined stone. It is manufactured glass — engineered to produce the same blue-against-dark, warm-against-light optical scattering effect that gives natural opal and moonstone their characteristic glow. The material is real and consistent; it is simply glass rather than a mineral. Sites that describe opalite as a natural gemstone are mislabeling the material; the honest label is "opalite glass" or "opalescent glass."
• What is the difference between opalite and opal?

  Opal is a natural hydrated silica mineraloid mined from deposits in Australia, Ethiopia, Mexico, and elsewhere; it ranges from Mohs 5.5 to 6.5 and includes both common opal (no play of color) and precious opal (with play of color). Opalite is manufactured glass at Mohs 5.5 that mimics the milky body and blue-to-peach scattering of common opal. They share a visual register but are entirely different materials at different price points.
• Is opalite the same as moonstone?

  No. Moonstone is a feldspar mineral (orthoclase) whose adularescent shimmer comes from light scattering between microscopic crystalline lamellae in the mineral structure. Opalite is glass whose similar shimmer comes from Rayleigh scattering in the glass matrix. The visual effect is comparable; the materials are unrelated. Some catalogs label opalite as "opal moonstone" or "moonstone opalite" — these names are misleading and should be read as opalite glass.
• Is pink opalite dyed?

  No — pink opalite is a colored-glass variant where the pink body color is engineered into the glass during manufacture, not applied as a surface dye. The color is permanent and will not fade or leach with cleaning. The same scattering effect that produces the blue-to-peach shift in white opalite is present in pink opalite, modified by the underlying body color.
• How durable is opalite for jewelry?

  Opalite is Mohs 5.5 — durable enough for necklaces, earrings, and most bracelets, but softer than most gemstone beads. In mixed-material strands, opalite will scratch if it abrades against harder stones (agate, quartz, jasper at Mohs 6.5–7). Plan strand layouts so opalite beads sit between softer materials or in positions where bead-to-bead contact is minimized. Avoid impact (glass chips at edges); use mild soap and soft cloth for cleaning.
