Moonstone Beads
Moonstone beads are feldspar with adularescence, the soft sheen that moves across each bead as it turns. Peach, blue, gray, white and black moonstone carry the sheen on a muted body; rainbow moonstone flashes blue and gold on a near-clear white. The stone is sold natural; the few dyed or plated strands say so in the title. Rounds run 4mm to 10mm, smooth or faceted, with rondelles, cubes, coins, nuggets and chips. Moonstone pairs with labradorite, pearl and aquamarine, and with sterling or rose gold findings.

What is adularescence and why does moonstone show it?
Adularescence is the soft floating sheen that defines moonstone — a band of light that appears to glide across the bead as it rotates. The effect is produced by light scattering off thin alternating layers of two feldspar species within the stone; as the bead's angle shifts, the layer geometry shifts and the sheen appears to move. The sheen is strongest in blue moonstone and rainbow moonstone, subtler in peach and pink, and sometimes absent in lower-grade white moonstone. -
Is rainbow moonstone real moonstone?
Rainbow moonstone is the established trade name for feldspar that shows a multi-color floating flash of blue, gold and sometimes violet across a near-transparent white body, mined mainly in India and Madagascar. Mineralogically it is an adularescent labradorite, a sibling of classic orthoclase moonstone in the same feldspar family, with the same Mohs 6–6.5 hardness and the same care. Is moonstone dyed?
Moonstone is sold natural. The body colors of white, peach, blue, gray and black and the floating sheen are in the rough, not added in processing. Bright candy colors on the wider market, such as electric blue, vivid green or magenta, are a dye signal; natural moonstone keeps a muted palette and lets the sheen do the work. How durable is moonstone for daily wear?
Moonstone is Mohs 6–6.5 with distinct cleavage planes, which makes it more fragile than its hardness number suggests. It is well-suited for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings; usable in rings if the design protects the stone (bezel settings preferred over prong). Avoid impact, avoid ultrasonic cleaning, avoid steam. Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap. The care profile sits closer to opal and labradorite than to the chalcedony family. -
