Citrine & Amethyst: One and the Same

Here's an interesting fact: Citrine was once Amethyst and vice versa. The only difference between the two stones is the impurities that create color in the stone.

Citrine is made when heat and pressure are applied to Amethyst over a long period of time. Amethyst's purple color gradually turns into a beautiful bright orange-yellow color.  Naturally formed Citrine is actually quite rare - most Citrine is made in controlled environments. Citrine is oftentimes called Golden Amethyst!

Ametrine is made when Amethyst has been fully turned into Citrine, and then beta radiation is used to turn some of the stone back to a purple color, hence the orange-purple combination! Ametrine, however, is usually formed naturally but can still be made in controlled environments as well. During the process of formation from Amethyst to Citrine, the stone is exposed to a lot of beta radiation, which reverses the oxidation process of the color change.
