Frequently asked questions

• Is Impression Jasper actually jasper?

No — despite the trade name, Impression Jasper is not a member of the jasper (chalcedony/quartz) family. It's a marketing name applied to dyed magnesite or dyed howlite, depending on the supplier. Both base materials are soft carbonate or borate minerals that take dye readily, which is how the stone gets its turquoise-blue, green, red, or earth-tone palettes. The name persists in the bead trade because the surface patterning resembles landscape jaspers, but the mineralogy, hardness, and care requirements are entirely different.
• How does the dye affect care and color longevity?

Because the color comes from dye rather than natural mineral pigmentation, Impression Jasper needs gentler handling than true jasper. Skip ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and any solvent-based jewelry dips — these can pull dye out of the porous base material. Prolonged soaking in water or exposure to perfumes, lotions, and sunscreens may also cause fading or color migration onto skin and metal findings over time. Wipe finished pieces with a soft dry or barely-damp cloth and mild soap only. Storing strands away from direct sunlight helps preserve the saturation between projects.
• What jewelry projects suit Impression Jasper best?

At Mohs 3.5–4, this is a soft bead better suited to low-impact wear: earrings, pendants, occasional-wear necklaces, and bracelets that don't take daily abrasion. Avoid ring settings and stretch bracelets worn at the keyboard or gym, where bead-on-bead and bead-on-surface contact will dull edges quickly. The matrix patterning and broad color range make it a strong substitute when a designer wants turquoise- or coral-look color blocking at a workable price point. Pairs well with sterling, antiqued brass, leather cord, and other earth-tone or dyed accent beads in the same palette.
• How do I tell Impression Jasper from real turquoise?

Impression Jasper in blue colorways is one of the most common turquoise look-alikes in the bead trade, alongside plain dyed howlite and dyed magnesite. The giveaway is usually hardness and weight: turquoise sits at Mohs 5–6 and feels denser, while Impression Jasper scratches more easily and feels lighter in hand. The veining on dyed material often shows dye pooling in the matrix lines, sometimes with a slightly waxy or chalky undertone where the dye didn't fully penetrate. If turquoise specifically is the requirement for a project, source from a strand labeled as turquoise rather than a trade-name substitute.
• What cuts and sizes does Dakota typically stock?

Current stock in this family centers on rounds (the most common cut), with double-drilled rounds, faceted rounds, rectangles, squares, and rondelles also available depending on the season. Bead sizes cluster around 6mm and 8mm for bracelet and multi-strand work, with 10mm and occasional 14mm options for statement necklaces and focal arrangements. Because Impression Jasper is a trade-name material sourced from multiple suppliers, color palettes and matrix patterns can vary noticeably between strands — checking the product photos for the specific SKU is the best way to confirm the look before ordering for a matched set.
