Frequently asked questions

• What gives Fancy Jasper its multicolor mottled appearance?

Fancy Jasper is a microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony) colored by varied mineral inclusions deposited during formation. The greens typically come from chlorite or other iron-magnesium silicates, the pinks and mauves from feldspar or iron compounds, and the cream tones from silica-rich zones. Because these inclusions distribute unevenly through the host rock, no two beads carry the same pattern. Strands cut from a single block will share a palette, but bead-to-bead variation is expected and is part of the material's character. Designers who need tight color matching should plan for some sorting within a strand or order extra footage to pull coordinating beads from.
• How is Fancy Jasper different from Polychrome Jasper and Picture Jasper?

All three are chalcedony-based jaspers, but the trade uses the names for distinct visual types. Fancy Jasper carries a soft mottled mix of greens, pinks, mauves, and creams — generally lighter and more pastel. Polychrome Jasper (also called Desert Jasper) shows warmer rust, ochre, and terracotta tones from Madagascar material. Picture Jasper displays landscape-like banding in tans and browns. Fancy Jasper is typically Indian in origin, while Polychrome comes from Madagascar and Picture Jasper from various US and African sources. If a specific look matters for a collection, check the product photos closely since trade names overlap across suppliers.
• Is Fancy Jasper treated or dyed?

Fancy Jasper is typically sold as a natural material — its color comes from mineral inclusions rather than dye, and stabilization is uncommon since the stone takes a polish well on its own. That said, treatment practices vary by supplier and lot. If you're stringing alongside other naturals and want to keep the piece treatment-free for client disclosure, confirm at the SKU level. Natural Fancy Jasper holds its color indefinitely under normal wear and won't fade from light exposure.
• What jewelry types does Fancy Jasper work best in?

At Mohs 6.5–7, Fancy Jasper handles daily wear well and suits most jewelry categories — bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and even ring components in protective settings. The muted multicolor palette pairs naturally with sterling silver, antiqued brass, and copper, and bridges well with other earth-tone stones like unakite, rhyolite, picture jasper, and matte onyx. Smaller rounds (4–6mm) work for delicate layering strands and mala-style designs; 8–10mm rounds anchor statement necklaces; slices and donuts make focal pendants. The soft color mix reads as bohemian or naturalist rather than formal, so it leans toward casual and artisan work.
• How should finished Fancy Jasper pieces be cleaned and stored?

Clean with mild soap, lukewarm water, and a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush around the drill holes, then rinse and pat dry. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can stress the bead structure along internal inclusion boundaries. Keep finished pieces away from prolonged contact with household chemicals, chlorinated water, and acidic substances. Although Fancy Jasper is durable, store strung pieces flat or hung separately to prevent the beads from abrading softer stones or metal findings in the same jewelry box. Wipe down after wear to remove skin oils and lotion residue that can dull the polish over time.
