First discovered in Japan by geologist Ke-Ichi Sugi, the stone we now know as Sugilite is a rare find and even more beautiful. Its deep purple hues come from manganese in its composition.
A relatively new discovery found in the 1940s, Charoite has a unique swirly purple appearance due to fibrous crystal masses throughout the stone's composition, making it look like it has a textured surface.
It is unlikely that big deposits of this stone will be found again because the first rough material was found at a rare geological formation called a Mastiff.
