Frequently asked questions
-
What is a square gemstone bead?
A square bead is cut and polished into a cube or near-cube form with six flat faces and crisp edges. Most are center-drilled straight through one face to the opposite face, so the bead sits flat on the wire with a face showing front and back. Sizes are usually quoted as a single edge dimension (8mm = an 8mm cube) or as two dimensions for flatter slab squares like 3x6mm. The geometry gives a structural, architectural look very different from rounds or rondelles, and the flat faces show off pattern and matrix in stones like jasper or picture jasper. -
What sizes does Dakota stock in square cut?
Current square stock spans small spacer cubes up through statement sizes. The deepest size is 12mm with 14 active SKUs, followed by 3x6mm slab squares (9 SKUs) and 8mm cubes (8 SKUs). Smaller scales are well represented too: 1x2mm (8), 6mm (7), 3mm (2), and 2mm (2), plus 10mm at 3 SKUs. Tiny 1x2mm and 2mm squares work as spacer accents between larger beads; 6mm and 8mm are the workhorse sizes for cube strands; 10mm and 12mm read as statement focals. Exact strand length and bead count should appear on each listing. -
Which stones come in square cut at Dakota?
Square is one of the broader shape inventories. Jasper leads with 11 active SKUs, followed by turquoise (7), then amazonite, labradorite, and amethyst at 4 each. Picture jasper, quartz, crazy lace agate, onyx, and African turquoise each have 3 SKUs. Patterned stones like jasper, picture jasper, and crazy lace agate show especially well in square cut because the flat faces frame the matrix and banding. Treatment varies by stone — turquoise is commonly stabilized, and dye or heat may apply to other materials. Treatment notes should be disclosed; ask before buying if it isn't specified. -
What jewelry designs work best with square beads?
Square beads suit structural, modern, and men's designs where the geometry itself carries the look. Strung continuously, cubes give a chunky, architectural bracelet or necklace with a different rhythm than rounds. Smaller 2–3mm squares work as spacers between larger focal beads or between metal components. Slab squares like 3x6mm sit flat against the skin and layer well in stacked bracelets. Square reads cleaner against metal findings — bezels, tube spacers, and disc accents — than it does against rounds. Mixing one square per row with rondelles or rounds breaks up an otherwise uniform strand. -
How is a square bead drilled and does the hole show?
Standard squares are drilled face-to-face through the center, so the wire enters one flat face and exits the opposite face. The hole is visible on two of the six faces but hidden on the four side faces that wrap the strand. Drill diameter varies by stone and bead size — softer stones and larger beads typically take a wider hole, while smaller 2–3mm squares may have a tight bore. If you're working with thicker beading wire, leather, or knotting cord, check the listed drill size or ask before buying.
