Spinel Beads

Spinel beads are natural spinel, untreated as a rule. Black spinel is the main line: an opaque, iron-rich spinel that takes a mirror polish and holds crisp facet edges at a hardness of 7.5 to 8. Multi spinel strands mix pink, lavender, gray and blue spinel on one strand. The cuts run from 2mm faceted rounds, rondelles and table cut cubes to 10mm smooth rounds, coins and drops. Black spinel pairs with pearl, tiger eye and sterling; multi spinel sits with ruby, garnet and rose gold.

Black spinel: the gem-black bead with a mirror polish

Black spinel is an opaque, iron-rich spinel, magnesium aluminum oxide in the cubic crystal system; the dark varieties carry the mineral names pleonaste and ceylonite. It is natural and untreated as a rule. With no cleavage and a hardness of 7.5 to 8, a faceted bead takes crisp edges and a mirror polish and keeps both in wear. Smooth black spinel reads as a deep, even black with a glassy surface; faceted black spinel returns light from every facet, which is why it stands in for black diamond.

Spinel is colored by trace elements: chromium gives red and pink, iron the grays, violets and blues, and cobalt the most saturated blue. Red spinel comes from Mogok in Myanmar and Mahenge in Tanzania; the pink and gray-to-blue material in multi spinel strands comes mostly from Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Spinel reaches the bead market untreated as a rule, so the color on a strand is the color the rough was mined in. Multi spinel mixes pink, lavender, gray and blue on one strand; black spinel is sold on its own.

    Red, pink, orange, purple, lavender, gray, blue and black, and the color is natural: spinel reaches the bead market untreated as a rule. It is not a diamond: black diamond is Mohs 10 and spinel is 7.5 to 8. The look is the reason faceted black spinel is a standard black for accent rows, spacer runs and all-black strands.
  • What is the story of spinel and the Black Prince's Ruby?
    The Black Prince's Ruby is a red spinel of about 170 carats, an irregular polished cabochon set in the front cross of the British Imperial State Crown. It was recorded in fourteenth-century Spain, came to Edward the Black Prince in 1367 as payment for a battle victory, and Henry V is said to have worn it at Agincourt in 1415. The Timur Ruby in the same collection, over 350 carats, is also spinel. Ruby and spinel were told apart as minerals only in 1783, when Romé de l'Isle measured their crystal angles; both are colored red by chromium and form in the same gravels.
  • What is multi spinel?
    Multi spinel, or multi-color spinel, is a strand format in which each bead is a different naturally colored spinel: pink, lavender, gray, cobalt blue and pale blue mixed along the strand. The rough comes from mixed parcels, most often Vietnamese, Sri Lankan and Tanzanian material, and the colors are the colors it was mined in. Each strand reads a little differently from the next. Multi spinel is cut small, in 1.5mm to 6mm faceted rounds, rondelles and table cut cubes, and sits with ruby, garnet, rose gold and sterling.
