Sonoran Turquoise Gemstone Beads
Mined in Mexico near the city of Cananea this turquoise is relatively new to the industry. Unlike most turquoise, Sonoran Gold is not mined in veins but rather as individual nuggets typically found in clay deposits. Accents of blue and gold against a green background make
Sonoran Gold Turquoise a great selection for statement jewelry. Sonoran Gold Turquoise is prized for its vibrant green and blue hues, often with a golden or brown matrix. Unlike many other turquoise varieties, it can feature a striking mix of both green and blue in the same stone.
This turquoise is known for having a higher silica content than many other types, giving it a naturally harder composition and a slightly waxy luster even before stabilization.
Since Sonoran Gold Turquoise is a relatively new find and is not as widely available as other turquoise varieties it has limited supply. The distinctive appearance makes it a sought-after choice for jewelry designers.

Frequently asked questions
-
Where does Sonoran turquoise come from?
Sonoran turquoise is mined in the Sonora region of northern Mexico, principally in and around the Cananea district near the Arizona border. The deposits are geologically continuous with the Arizona copper-porphyry belt that also produces Sleeping Beauty, Morenci, and Kingman turquoise — Sonoran is the Mexican-side material from the same broader mineralogical setting. The color register runs from saturated bright blue through blue-green, with a yellow-green subregister marketed as "Sonoran Gold." -
Is Sonoran turquoise stabilized?
Most Sonoran turquoise sold as beads is stabilized, which is standard treatment for turquoise across virtually all current-production sources. Stabilization impregnates the stone with a clear resin under pressure, hardening it for bead use and locking the color against years of wear. A stabilized strand is still real turquoise — the color and matrix are intrinsic to the rough material. Treatment status should be disclosed per strand; ask before buying if it isn't specified. -
What's the difference between Sonoran turquoise and Sleeping Beauty?
Both come from the same broader copper-porphyry belt — Sleeping Beauty from Globe, Arizona; Sonoran from the Mexican side of the border, principally the Cananea area. Both produce clean, saturated blue turquoise. The practical difference today is availability: the Sleeping Beauty mine closed to commercial turquoise production in 2012, and remaining stock is priced as a collector material. Sonoran is a current-production source in a similar palette range. Designers wanting Sleeping Beauty's clean blue often consider Sonoran as the available alternative. -
How durable is Sonoran turquoise for daily wear?
Stabilized Sonoran turquoise is Mohs 5.5–6 — durable enough for any jewelry application with standard turquoise care. Avoid prolonged contact with household chemicals, perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products; wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear; avoid ultrasonics and steam cleaning. Color stability over years of wear depends primarily on the quality of stabilization, not on the source region. -
