Frequently asked questions
-
What red gemstone beads do you carry?
Dakota's red collection is anchored by Red Jasper and Garnet at strand level. Carnelian (warm red-orange), Mookaite (mottled red-burgundy), Picasso Jasper (banded earth-reds), Ruby (faceted, fine-jewelry grade), and Spiny Oyster (natural shell) round out the range. Over 30 additional stones contribute red varieties — including specialty material like Cinnabar and Red Tiger Eye. -
Is red jasper dyed or natural?
Most red jasper is natural — the iron-oxide content that gives jasper its red color is built into the stone, not added. Treatments do exist in the broader bead trade (some 'red jasper' is actually dyed howlite or dyed magnesite), so individual listings should specify treatment. Authentic red jasper has a slight unevenness in tone within a strand; perfectly uniform red beads are worth a second look. -
What's the difference between red garnet and ruby?
Garnet and ruby are different mineral families. Garnet (most commonly almandine or pyrope species in the red range) has a deeper, slightly browner red and is Mohs 6.5–7.5. Ruby is corundum (Mohs 9), with a brighter, more saturated red and a higher refractive index that gives it more visible internal fire. Ruby is typically heated to enhance color; garnet is rarely treated. -
Which red gemstones are birthstones?
Garnet is the traditional January birthstone — almandine and pyrope species are most common in the bead trade. Ruby is the July birthstone. Both appear at multiple price points in Dakota's catalog: Garnet at everyday strand prices, Ruby in higher-end faceted rondelles and rounds. -
Which red beads hold up best for daily-wear jewelry?
For daily wear, prioritize hardness and treatment stability. Garnet (6.5–7.5 Mohs), Ruby (9), and Carnelian (6.5–7) all wear well. Red Jasper (6.5–7) is durable but can pick up surface scuffs over time. Spiny Oyster is shell, not stone — fine for occasional wear but softer (3.5) and porous, so it should not contact perfume, lotion, or harsh cleaners.
