Larimar Beads
Larimar beads are natural blue pectolite from the Dominican Republic, the only place the stone is found. The color runs from white and sky blue to a deep volcanic blue, set by traces of copper and crossed by white marbling. Larimar is cut into rounds, rondelles, heishi, pebbles and nuggets and graded A to AAA by the depth of its blue; a few small faceted strands are dyed and marked as such. In jewelry making it goes to earrings, pendants and necklaces, and pairs with turquoise, amazonite, aquamarine and silver.

About this stone
Frequently asked questions
-
Is larimar really only found in the Dominican Republic?
Yes. Larimar is the blue variety of pectolite, and it comes from one volcanic deposit in the mountains above Baoruco, in Barahona province on the south coast of the Dominican Republic. The pectolite fills cavities and veins in altered basalt over an area of about 0.15 square kilometers. Pectolite occurs elsewhere in white and gray; the blue is found here alone. -
What is the difference between sky blue, deep blue and volcanic blue larimar?
Color saturation. Sky blue is the lightest and the most common: pale to medium blue with white marbling across it. Deep blue is more saturated, with less white. Volcanic blue is the deepest natural color, a strong blue with little white, and the rarest in any size. Traces of copper color the stone, and value follows the blue: the more blue and the less white or green, the higher the grade, from A to AAA. -
What is the difference between larimar and turquoise?
They are different minerals colored by the same element. Larimar is pectolite, a sodium calcium silicate, and turquoise is a copper aluminum phosphate; copper gives both their blue. Larimar is a paler, cloudier blue with white marbling, and turquoise is more opaque, often green-blue, with dark veins of matrix. Larimar comes from one deposit in the Dominican Republic, while turquoise is mined on several continents. Turquoise is a little harder, Mohs 5 to 6 against 4.5 to 5, and the two pair well in one design. -
Why is larimar expensive?
Supply. All larimar comes from one small deposit, mined by hand in workings that flood in the rains, so production is uneven from year to year. Rough is hard to grade before it is cut: by a mine owner's estimate recorded by GIA, about a fifth can be cut and about one piece in twenty is gem quality. Deep blue material with little white is the smallest share, which is why AAA strands sit well above A grade. -
Does larimar fade in sunlight?
Larimar's color holds in normal wear. The standing advice in the trade is to keep it out of long direct sun and high heat, and heat is the proven risk: in GIA's tests a jeweler's torch turned the stone whiter and less translucent, while more than 50 hours under strong light left the color unchanged. Larimar is cleaned with mild soap, water and a soft cloth and stored apart from harder stones.
