Labradorite is remarkable for the way its aggregate layers refract light, creating iridescent flashes of blue, gold, pale green or copper red. This effect is known as “labradorescence,” taking its name from the stone. Labradorite is usually gray to green, dark gray, light gray or black. It was discovered in Labrador, Canada in 1770 and named for the area, though it is referenced as a highly revered stone in much older Inuit tribal legends.

What gives labradorite its flash

What gives labradorite its flash

That blue-and-gold shimmer has a name: labradorescence. Light bounces between microscopic layers inside the feldspar, so the color you see depends entirely on the angle. At rest the bead reads charcoal grey — tilt it toward the light and it flashes peacock blue, gold, and green. No two beads flash the same way.

Pairs well with

Lapis Lazuli

Deep, even blue, shot through with gold pyrite, lapis lazuli is a classic blue and gold stone that layers naturally with cooler palettes and metallic accents.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is larvikite the same as labradorite?
No, though they share the silvery-blue flash designers recognize. Larvikite (sometimes spelled larvakite) is a monzonite igneous rock from the Larvik region of Norway, dominated by ternary feldspar crystals that produce a soft schiller across a dark gray to nearly black matrix. Labradorite is a single plagioclase feldspar mineral, usually lighter in body color, with sharper peacock blue, green, and gold labradorescence. Both stones get their flash from lamellar feldspar microstructure, but larvikite reads as a darker, more uniformly speckled stone in finished jewelry. Mohs hardness is comparable (6–6.5), so they wear similarly.
  • Does larvikite need any treatment to show its flash?
No. The blue-silver schiller in larvikite is structural, not applied — it comes from light interacting with the lamellar feldspar layers inside the rock itself. Larvikite is typically sold natural, with no dye, stabilization, or coating needed to bring out the flash. Polishing simply exposes more reflective surface. If a particular SKU has any treatment — ask before buying if it isn't specified. Because the effect is internal, it won't fade with sunlight, sweat, or normal wear, which makes larvikite a forgiving choice for pieces that see daily use.
  • What kind of jewelry does larvikite work best in?
Larvikite reads as a neutral dark stone with directional flash, which makes it useful as a grounding element next to brighter materials. The 6mm and 8mm rounds Dakota stocks suit men's bracelets, mala-style strands, layered necklaces, and unisex designs where a brooding base color is wanted. Faceted rounds catch more light off the flash planes and work well in earrings or focal stations. It pairs cleanly with oxidized silver, matte black findings, hematite, pyrite, smoky quartz, and labradorite. Against warm metals like brass or rose gold, the cool blue schiller picks up contrast nicely.
  • How durable is larvikite for everyday wear?
Larvikite sits at Mohs 6–6.5, which puts it in the same general durability tier as labradorite, moonstone, and amazonite. That's solid for earrings, necklaces, and bracelets worn regularly. For rings or bangles that take repeated impact against hard surfaces, expect scuffing on the polished surface over time — a softer stone in a high-wear position will dull. Clean with mild soap, lukewarm water, and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and prolonged exposure to acids or harsh household chemicals, since these can etch the feldspar and dull the flash.
  • How do I tell larvikite apart from gabbro or 'black moonstone'?
All three turn up in the bead trade with overlapping looks. Gabbro (sometimes sold as 'mystic merlinite' or 'Indigo gabbro') is a darker rock with mottled black, gray, and sometimes lavender or white patches, and generally lacks the directional blue schiller larvikite shows. 'Black moonstone' is a trade term usually applied to dark feldspar from Madagascar with a softer, more diffuse adularescence rather than larvikite's crisp lamellar flash. Larvikite specifically refers to the Norwegian monzonite from the Larvik area and has a recognizable speckled gray body with cool blue-silver glints across the surface when rotated under light.
