Hematite Beads

Hematite beads are natural iron oxide, dark steel gray with a mirror polish, heavy for their size and non-magnetic. Plated hematite beads carry silver, gold, rose gold, copper, pyrite or rainbow finishes over the same natural base, bright or matte. Sizes run 2mm to 8mm: rounds, faceted rounds, rondelles, cubes and hexagons that work as spacers or as full strands. Hematite pairs with turquoise, coral and lapis, and with sterling or gunmetal findings.

Natural hematite, mirror gray

Hematite is iron oxide, polished to a mirror metallic gray. The real stone is easy to know in hand: heavy for its size, cool to the touch, non-magnetic, with a red-brown streak beneath the surface shine. Every strand here is natural hematite — dark steel gray, dense, the same stone in every size and cut — not hematine, the magnetized ceramic sold under the same name.

Every bead starts as natural hematite. Unplated, it polishes to a dark steel gray. The plated finishes — silver, gold, rose gold, copper, pyrite, rainbow — are surface coatings bonded to that natural base, bright or matte, and each product title names the finish. Plating holds up through ordinary jewelry wear; a wipe-dry after wearing keeps the finish bright.

Hematite runs 2mm to 8mm: rounds, faceted rounds, rondelles, faceted rondelles, cubes and corner-cut cubes, hexagons, nuggets, chips, tubes and heishi, with 2mm to 4mm the core sizes. The small rounds and cubes work as spacers; 6mm and 8mm rounds carry a strand on their own. At Mohs 5.5–6.5 it wears well in necklaces, bracelets and earrings: mild soap, soft cloth, store dry. The stone is dense, so long strands carry real weight. Hematite pairs with turquoise, coral and lapis, and with sterling or gunmetal findings.

    The base stone is real hematite: natural iron-oxide hematite, polished and shaped. The gold, rose gold, copper, silver and rainbow finishes are surface coatings applied to that natural hematite base. The underlying stone is real; the metallic color is a coating. Each product title names the finish, and unplated strands are titled hematite alone.
  • How durable is the coating on coated hematite?
    The coating is bonded to the stone surface and holds up well under ordinary jewelry wear — necklaces, earrings, pendants, and standard-wear bracelets. High-contact applications (rings, heavily-worn cuff bracelets, designs with sustained stone-to-stone abrasion) can wear through the coating at contact points over years of use. For maximum wear resistance, natural steel-gray hematite is the more durable finish; for design flexibility across the metallic-color spectrum, coated hematite is the standard catalog choice.
  • Is hematite magnetic?
    True hematite is natural iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) and is not strongly magnetic at room temperature: a natural hematite bead will not pick up a paper clip. "Magnetic hematite" sold in the bead market is typically hematine, a synthetic ceramic of magnetized barium ferrite made to imitate hematite's look and density. They look similar but are different materials, and the magnet test is the quick check. Every strand here is natural hematite; none is hematine.
  • Does hematite tarnish?
    Natural hematite doesn't tarnish in the way silver does, but the polished surface can develop slight dulling from prolonged skin contact, oils, and moisture. A wipe with a soft cloth restores the shine. Coated hematite can lose its finish over years of heavy wear through abrasion rather than oxidation; the underlying natural hematite remains intact beneath the coating.
