Clear Quartz Beads

Clear quartz beads are the colorless member of the quartz family, sold as crystal quartz or rock crystal — three names for one natural, untreated stone. With no color of its own, the cut decides the look: faceted rounds and rondelles catch and scatter light, smooth rounds read cool and icy, and 8mm rounds are the mala size. It sits between colored stones without competing — the classic spacer. Among quartz beads it is the plain one, the clear ground rose quartz, smoky quartz, amethyst and citrine are set against.

Clear quartz is natural rock crystal

Clear quartz is natural rock crystal — the colorless, untreated form of quartz, and the same stone the trade labels crystal quartz. The best of it is water-clear; most of it carries faint veils, wisps, or tiny inclusions, and that is the quickest way to tell it from glass, which is either flawlessly uniform or full of round bubbles. Quartz is also harder than glass and cooler in the hand. Those small natural marks are the proof it's the real stone, and the colorless body is why it works with every palette.

Clear quartz is graded on clarity, not color. A-grade strands are water-clear; standard strands carry some veiling and the odd inclusion; at the far end the stone turns cloudy and is sold as milky or snow quartz. None of it is dyed or heated — the look comes out of the ground as it is — and the finishes are all surface: polished for the glassy look, faceted for sparkle, matte for a frosted, icy read. Coated aura quartz and dyed crackle quartz are different products and are labelled as such.

Clear quartz is hard and everyday-durable (Mohs 7) — wipe it with mild soap and a soft cloth, and ultrasonic cleaning is generally fine. It is cut into more shapes than almost any other stone: smooth and faceted rounds from 2mm accents to 15mm, with 6mm and 8mm rounds also drilled large hole for cord, plus faceted rondelles, table-cut cubes, hearts, stars, coins, faceted nuggets, pebbles, points, and rough-cut collars. Faceted rounds and rondelles make the classic spacer, lifting and separating colored stones in a design; smooth rounds and pebbles read softer. It pairs with everything, but especially the rest of the quartz family — rose quartz, smoky quartz, amethyst, and citrine.

  • Is clear quartz the same as crystal quartz and rock crystal?
    Yes — clear quartz, crystal quartz, and rock crystal are three names for the same material: colorless, transparent silicon dioxide (SiO₂), the same crystal chemistry that underlies amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, and rose quartz. Those colored varieties get their color from trace elements; clear quartz is the end-member without them. Older lapidary literature says "rock crystal"; the bead trade uses "crystal quartz" and "clear quartz" interchangeably, and Dakota's strands are listed as crystal quartz.
  • How do I tell clear quartz from glass?
    Four signals. Hardness: quartz is Mohs 7 and resists scratching from a steel blade; typical soda-lime glass is around Mohs 5.5 and scratches more easily. Weight: quartz is heavier in hand than glass beads of the same size. Temperature: quartz feels cooler to the touch than glass. Internal character: natural quartz almost always shows some veiling, included needles, healed fractures, or milky zones, while glass is either flawlessly uniform or carries round air bubbles. Perfectly clear, inclusion-free beads at unusually low prices are often glass.
  • Is clear quartz treated or dyed?
    No — the colorless look is the natural state of the rough. No dye, heat, or coating is involved, and Dakota's clear quartz strands are labelled Natural. Coated quartz ("aura quartz," "angel aura," "titanium quartz") and dyed crackle quartz are separate products, catalogued and labelled as such, and do not appear in this collection.
  • Why does my clear quartz have veils or cloudy spots inside?
    That is natural quartz character. Clear quartz forms in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites over geological time; internal veils, growth lines, healed fractures, and milky zones are the signature of natural rough, and they read as authenticity rather than defects. Perfectly clear, inclusion-free beads at low prices are more often glass than premium quartz. Within a single strand, bead-to-bead variation in clarity is normal.
  • What sizes and cuts do clear quartz beads come in?
    Rounds carry the range — 2mm and 3mm accents, 4mm and 6mm everyday sizes, 8mm to 15mm statement rounds — in smooth, faceted, microfaceted, and matte finishes, with 6mm and 8mm rounds also drilled as large hole beads for cord. Beyond rounds: faceted rondelles from 2x3mm to 12mm, table-cut and faceted cubes, coins, hexagons, hearts, stars and clovers, faceted nuggets and tumbled pebbles, points and rough-cut collars, and specimen pieces. Clear quartz is Mohs 7, so any of them holds up in daily-wear pieces.
