The premium source is Marlborough Creek in central Queensland, Australia — most often cited for the deepest, most uniform apple-green saturation. Indonesia (principally Sulawesi) is the other significant commercial source and trends slightly cooler in tone with more bead-to-bead variation. Smaller deposits in Tanzania, Brazil, Poland, and the United States produce occasional material. Dakota's current chrysoprase stock is principally Australian and Indonesian. -
Is chrysoprase dyed?
Every chrysoprase strand in Dakota's catalog is sold natural — the apple-to-mint green is produced by trace nickel that has substituted into the chalcedony during the stone's formation, not by dye or coating. Across the broader market, dyed green chalcedony occasionally enters under the chrysoprase name; the signal is uniform intense color with no bead-to-bead variation, since natural chrysoprase shows saturation differences across a single strand. Treatment status should be disclosed — ask before buying if it isn't specified. -
What's the difference between chrysoprase and chrysocolla?
Chrysoprase is nickel-colored chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz at Mohs 6.5–7 in the apple-to-mint green range. Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate — a different mineral entirely, softer (Mohs ~2.5–3.5 on its own, harder when in chalcedony as "chrysocolla chalcedony" or "gem silica"), and typically blue-green to teal rather than apple green. The names sound similar and the colors can overlap, but they are unrelated minerals with very different durability. -
Is lemon chrysoprase actually chrysoprase?
No. "Lemon chrysoprase" is a trade name for nickel-bearing magnesite — a carbonate mineral at Mohs 3.5–4, much softer than true chrysoprase. The nickel coloration is similar, which is why the name stuck in the trade, but the underlying mineral and the durability are different. Designers buying for ring or bracelet applications should know that lemon chrysoprase requires significantly more care than true chrysoprase. Dakota does not stock lemon chrysoprase under this collection. -
How durable is chrysoprase for daily wear?
Mohs 6.5–7 — durable enough for any jewelry application, including rings, bracelets, and necklaces. Standard care: wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap. Chrysoprase color is stable under normal wear, though prolonged direct sunlight and high heat have been reported to dull saturation over time in some material; this is a merchandising consideration (window displays, long-term storage) rather than a concern for ordinary wear.
