Frequently asked questions
-
Where does Botswana agate come from?
Botswana agate is sourced principally from the Bobonong region in the Central District of northern Botswana, with the deposit extending across the border into southwestern Zimbabwe. The geological setting is silica-rich solutions that filled cavities in ancient volcanic rock hundreds of millions of years ago — depositing the tight rhythmic bands of chalcedony you see in a polished bead. Material from the Zimbabwean side of the deposit occasionally enters the trade under the Botswana name; the polished stone is visually and mineralogically the same. -
Is Botswana agate dyed?
No — every Botswana agate strand in Dakota's catalog is sold natural. The muted palette of pink, peach, gray, cream, and brown is intrinsic to the rough; the bands survive cutting and polishing unchanged. Dyeing is uncommon for this variety because the natural color register is already what designers want. Bright candy-color strands sold as "Botswana agate" — electric blue, neon purple, vivid magenta — are dye signals; natural Botswana's palette is muted. -
What's the difference between Botswana agate and other agates?
The defining visual difference is the band geometry. Botswana agate shows tight, parallel, often concentric bands — sometimes called fortification banding — in a muted palette of pink, peach, gray, cream, and brown. Crazy lace agate shows swirling, looping bands in brighter colors; moss agate shows green dendritic inclusions in translucent quartz with no banding; dzi shows etched and dyed eye patterns. Botswana is the quiet, fine-banded agate with a soft natural palette. -
How durable is Botswana agate for daily wear?
Mohs 6.5–7 — durable enough for any jewelry application, including rings, bracelets, and necklaces. Standard care: wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap; no special handling required. Because Botswana agate is sold natural with no dye, there is no fade risk and no concern about ultrasonic or steam cleaning leaching pigment from the stone. -
What sizes and cuts does Dakota carry?
Our active Botswana agate inventory centers on 8mm and 6mm rounds, with 4mm, 10mm, and 12mm rounds also stocked. Round is the dominant cut; rondelle and faceted variants appear in select sizes. Full size and cut availability is filterable in the grid above; designers replenishing an existing design can confirm exact strand specifications on each listing.
